As part of effort by his administration to ensure potable water for the citizenry, the Cross River State Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke yesterday commissioned the first phase of the Ikom Water Scheme valued at N5.5 billion.

Performing the commissioning, Imoke revealed that the scheme which will be managed under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) is a fulfillment of a campaign promise he made to the people.

According to him, “We needed to get water to Ikom within the shortest possible time because it was a promise I made during my campaign in the area.

“Ikom is one of the fastest growing towns in Cross River because of the many economic activities going on here and we must be a step ahead or it will suffer due to congestion.”

The Governor disclosed that contract for the second phase of the water project has already been awarded.

When completed, water supply will be extended to adjoining communities including Okuni, Edor and Effraya, he stated.

Imoke thanked the people of Ikom for their patience and urged them to protect the facility.

Commissioner for Water Resources, Engr. Elemi Etowa, described the project as the fastest way of providing potable water to the town and adjoining communities which had before now faced acute water shortage, adding that the overall plan is that all Cross River would be supplied with potable water.
