Comrade Cosmos Okiri a native of Ukwutia village in Utugwang North ward of Obudu, and an aspirant for the Obudu constituency ticket in the Cross River State House of Assembly, CRSHA.
In this interview with CrossRiverWatch, he says that the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP needs to inject more fresh blood into the political space of Cross River State.
The former branch Secretary of Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) – PETROSTUFF branch said that since democracy is defined as the government of the people, by the people, and for the people, he is coming to mark the end to having absentee representatives who “after being elected into office your people can’t feel nor see your presence. These are some of the things I am coming to change. I represent that change for Obudu people.” he said.
According to him, “It is my people that are sending me there; I have been blessed by them, I have done my consultation with all stakeholders of the community and I have their blessing”.
His words “The present system of representation that the Local Government is having is inaccessible. There is no feedback mechanism, you are representing your people and they don’t know what you are doing, you are not carrying the people along. That is the gap I want to fill”.
He said, “My chances are high, my people desire change and I’m bringing in the change with new concepts and ideas, injecting new blood in the politics of our society. Because now we see people just been recycled, today you hold one office tomorrow another for over 20 years”.
Though according to hi, he has not been an active partisan politician, he believes he can fit in, “I have not been an active participant in the politics but I’m coming because I have ideas; however from my students union experience and professional labor union, I have experiences also from my over ten years in the private sector (petroleum) which if I bring on board with the support of my people we will move ahead”.
