There are hopes that the deplorable state of the Yahe-Ukele-Igede highway may soon receive the attention of the federal government in the 2016 Appropriation proposal.
This follows the moving of a motion by Hon. Jarigbe Agom, Member representing Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency calling on the House of Representatives to pass a resolution that the federal ministry of Power/Works and Housing, carry out the reconstruction of the federal highway connecting Cross River and Benue states, with a view to saving same from total collapse and easing the suffering of communities along the route.
While moving the motion, Hon. Jarigbe noted that “The road from Yahe through Ukele in Yala Local Government Areas of Cross River State which links Igede in Benue state is a single lane road, which is plagued by severe gully erosion and has eaten deep into the road and riddled with pot holes, as a result of which commuters are usually stranded for several hours or days, whenever their vehicles break down on the road.
He expressed concerned that “The deplorable state of the road is adversely affecting commercial activities between the two states and it is now unsafe for inter state traders and commuters to travel through the road. The House is further concerned that 90% of the communities along the route are local farmers who depend solely on the sale of agricultural produce as their source of livelihood is greatly affected by the deplorable state of the road and they can no longer convey their goods to the market.
After taking the motion, the House referred it to the Committee on Power/Works/Housing for inclusion in the 2015 Appropriation proposal.
In a related development, Hon. Jarigbe Agom has also appointed 22 of his constituents into different positions of responsibility in his constituency office.
Hon. Agom told CrossRiverWatch that it was part of his effort to ensure that he gives his people effective and meaningful representation. He said he was very delighted to have been able to pull that number of people out of the labor market.
Below is the list of the appointees and their various offices.
