The governing council of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) is not aware of the suspension of the institution’s bursar, Peter Agi says the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the varsity, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

Iwuanyanwu disclosed this in a telephone conference with a group of journalists in Calabar where he said the council has not been briefed officially on the lingering crisis between the university management between the Vice Chancellor (VC), Professor Zana Akpagu and the suspended bursar and pointed out that, as the Chief Executive of the University, the VC had the right to take whatever action he wants to take and report to the council if there is something wrong.

“The council ‎has not sat on the matter, The VC is the person that suspended him and if the Registrar signed the letter as a Council Secretary, the council has not met.

“I have not received an official report, they will send me an official report on this matter and I have a council meeting in the next few days. At the council meeting, we will now look at the whole issue and take a decision on whether to sustain the action or to revoke the action.”

On management’s decision to suspend Agi, he said that; “Apparently he can exercise Powers as the Vice Chancellor as he called a management meeting and decided to suspend the Bursar. But the council has not met and as I am talking to you now I have not received the report.

“As a Vice Chancellor he has the right to suspend people. If he has not sacked him, as a father of the University I will do my best to reconcile all the interest groups. I want them to have peace and work together”.

Iwuanyanwu said the governing council of the university is scheduled to meet on September 5, 2016.

It will be recalled that CrossRiverWatch Tuesday, reported that the management of the UNICAL suspended the institution’s bursar after an emergency management meeting on Monday.

A letter signed by the Registrar of the University and Council Secretary, Moses O Abang and addressed to Agi with reference number UC/R.45A, dated August 22, 2016 directed Agi to “handover immediately to Mrs. Atim Mensah who is the most senior Deputy Bursar while Mr. Joseph Odum is to take over the previous duties covered by Mrs. Mensah”.

Part of the letter read; “In an Emergency Meeting of Management held today, August 22, 2016, Management considered recent developments on campus especially your arrest by the Nigeria Police vide letter no. AB:3621/CRS/DFA/VOL.T/123 of August 17, 2016 on allegations of fraud, forgery and threat to life, it has become imperative that you step aside as Bursar and clear yourself of these allegations”

The letter also said the council will be briefed accordingly.

However, Agi maintained that he is still the bursar claiming he has not being served a letter of suspension as he is currently on sick break which he said he had informed the principal officers of the institution by writing.
