Mr. Bassey is squaring up with a former ally and former state chairman of the party, Mr. Ekpo Okon in the primaries and is said to have visited Transcorp hotel in Calabar to attend a meeting convened by the electoral panel to settle the stalemate between him and Mr. Okon when he was attacked.
The attack, according to Mr. Bassey while addressing the press in his residence was sponsored by his opponent.
One member of the electoral panel whose name was simply given as Mr. Femi was also attacked leaving him with a bleeding nose while other members of the panel had their clothes thorn.
Earlier, he had told our reporter on phone that he was severe pains following the attack by Mr. Okon and his thugs and is in hospital.
“My car was driven by Ekpo to the police station and left there and when I went to meet him in the hotel to discuss on how the election can take place, I was attacked and wounded. I am now in hospital,” He said.
Mr. Okon could not be reached for comments as at press time as several calls placed to his phone were not answered.
