Team Cross River State in the just concluded National Sports Festival Abuja 2018 clinched a total of 22 medals.
Also, Hon. Orok Duke Chairman, Cross River State Sports Commission and Leader of Team Cross River delegation to the NSF Abuja 2018 attributed to the not too good performance of his contingent to betrayal from some athletes.
According to Orok in a release made available to our newsroom said, “As we conclude the National Sports Festival in Abuja today, Team Cross River is thankful to God,to Governor Ben Ayade and to all our dedicated Athletes and Coaches.
“We attended the Abuja games and took part in only 8 sporting events, viz: Table Tennis, Wrestling, Boxing, Taekwando, Karate, Swimming, Athletics and Weightlifting.
“We won a total of 22 medals at the end of the games. We also bidded to host the 2020 edition of the games …to be known as ‘Paradise Games’.
“As we return to Calabar,Canaan City,we pray for Journey Mercies, for all. Some Cross River State athletes (names not mentioned) took money, performed and won medals for Akwa Ibom, Kano and Delta States as mercenaries.
“In response, I have approved for them to move on and I deliberately refused to petition or get them disqualified and the various medals nullified. We took the developments as lessons and are determined to do the needful, henceforth.
“It was a challenging outing, but it was worth it. It is still work in progress… God is faithful. Saleh.” He ends.
As at the time of filing this report, the contingent is yet to arrive Calabar.
