The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has presented a certificate of return to the winner of the February 26th, 2022, legislative by-election into the Akpabuyo State constituency seat, Dr. Effiom Ekeng Edet.
Mr. Edet, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, was declared winner of the elections after polling 5,866 votes to beat his closest rival, Bassey Ekpo of the All Progressives Congress, who clinched 5,363 votes.
The election was characterized by low voter turnout, vote buying and alleged violence.
And, 11 days after being declared winner, the INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Cross River, Dr. Cyril Omorogbe presented the Certificate of Return to him at the commission’s office in Calabar.
Mr. Edet is expected to present the Certificate to the Clerk of the House of Assembly and should be sworn-in afterwards.
