The University of Calabar has postponed its 35th convocation ceremony over the uncertainties caused by the ongoing strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The ceremony which sees the award of certificates to graduates across different strata was billed for March 25th and 26th, 2022.

But, a release issued by the Registrar of the Varsity, Gabriel Egbe attributed the postponement to the “prevailing uncertainties in the educational sector.” Accordingly, the Registrar said a new date will be communicated.

ASUU embarked on strike on February 14th, 2022, over the failure of the Federal Government to implement its renegotiated 2009 agreement. The industrial action, initially billed for only a month, was extended for an additional 8 weeks due to the failure of both parties to reach an agreement.

Meanwhile, a letter sighted by CrossRiverWatch shows that the governing council of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has approved a 30 percent slash of the fees paid by intending and current students in the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, Obubra campus.

The Registrar of the institution and secretary of council, Victor Ene in a letter dated December 9th, 2021 and addressed to the Vice Chancellor, conveyed the decision of the council which held on December 7th, 2021.

A memo was sent to it to approve a 50 percent reduction. And, “after extensive deliberation, Council approved a 30 percent reduction in school fees for students in the above stated faculty,” the letter read.

The measure, “is to boost enrollment of prospective students,” the letter read. “The new school fee regime is effective from the 2021/2022 academic year,” the letter read.
