The Senator representing Cross River South in the Senate, Senator Gershom Bassey has thrown his weight behind the proposed Federal University of Agriculture, Ogoja.
The Senator who spoke on the floor of the Senate said there was a need for Nigeria and Cross River to have an institution of learning tailored toward agricultural academics and research.
The frontline contender for the PDP Cross River Governorship ticket praised Sen. Jarigbe Agom, a member representing Cross River North for the idea, called on other Senators to support the bill for the institution.
“I rise to support this bill in its entirety. I also commend the sponsor for bringing out this topical issue in our country today. It is important that we have this type of University in Nigeria. Therefore, I urge my colleagues to support this bill.” Gershom said.
Also speaking in support of the bill, Senator Frank Ibezim, Imo North Senatorial District said, “I commend the mover for this timely bill. Whatever we can do to encourage agriculture should be supported by all of us. There is a need for us to encourage agriculture and curb the unemployment rate in our country.”
The bill for an Act to establish the Federal University of Agriculture Ogoja, Cross River State, and to make comprehensive provisions for its due management and administration and for related matters, 2022 (SB.809), sponsored by Senator Jarigbe Agom was read a second time and subsequently referred to the Joint Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND and Agricultural Development for further legislative action.
