University Of Calabar To Tighten Security Over Terror Attack

 By Patrick Obia

The management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) says they will tighten security in the institution haven “received classified intelligence report indicating imminent terror attack on staff and students.”

In a memo with reference number UC/REG/CIR/68 signed by the registrar, Gabriel Egbe noted that “any moment from now, there would be heightened cult activities and kidnapping within and around the University of Calabar environment” by suspected militants through the waterways and adjoining creeks.

He added that the suspected attacks are targeted at resident lecturers and identified students in the varsity.

It reads: “Management has just received a classified intelligence report indicating an imminent terror attack on staff and students of the University of Calabar. The security report indicates that any moment from now, there would be heightened cult activities and kidnapping within and around the University of Calabar environment.

“The perceived kidnapping incidents are to be carried out by militants, and their targets would be resident lecturers and some identified students. The attackers, according to the reports, may use the waterways and adjoining creeks to launch their attacks.

“Management wishes to reiterate its earlier position on the closing of all entry and exit points into and from the University campus.

“The Acting Chief Security Officer is again reminded to ensure adequate surveillance of all residential areas, especially those leading to the waterways.

“Meanwhile, staff and students are hereby assured that management will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that our internal security personnel are made to work closely with other security agencies in the task of protecting the lives of all residents and those doing legitimate businesses on campus.

“Members of the university community are therefore advised to promptly report any unusual movement within and around the campus to the Ag. Chief Security Officer on 08078794663.

“Our dear students are to go about their legitimate activities without fear of intimidation from any quarters.

“On behalf of the Vice Chancellor, I wish all our staff and students a very safe, peaceful, and productive academic session.”
