Some traders at the Ika Ika Oqua (Marian) market of Calabar Municipal Local Government Area, Cross River State are currently counting losses as shops and goods worth millions of Naira have been razed down by fire.

The fire, according to eyewitnesses, started in the early hours of Saturday 21 January 2023 at about 3 am when it ignited from one of the shops.

However, the cause of the inferno which burnt down a cold room to ashes, including a chemist shop, breweries stack shop, and makeup studio among other shops can not be ascertained by victims and sympathizers.

When CrossRiverWatch got to the scene some of the victims and sympathizers were busy trying to quench the remaining fire.

They lamented the ineffectiveness of the Fire Service in the State in emergencies, complaining they reached out to them at the initial stage and their calls went unanswered but later got feedback they had no diesel.

CrossRiverWatch Reached out to Fire Service both State and Federal for comment but their numbers were switched off.
