The proprietor of Gramic fish farm, Mr. Udie Mike has written the Chairman of the Obudu Local Government Council, Mr. Eraye Ewhe over the breaking of the fence and encroachment into the Senator Liyel Imoke Civic Center.
The Civic Center is located along Calabar Road, at the urban center of the Local Government and less than 800 meters away from the council headquarters, the central motor park, and the Uti J.A Agba memorial stadium.
In a letter dated May 19, 2023, and obtained by CrossRiverWatch, Mr. Udie accused members of the Council of perpetrating the act which he said was not in the public interest.
“It is observed that the Civic Center fence has been broken and civil structural works going on illegally in the area by members of your Council along Calabar Road axis,” Udie wrote.
The letter further reads; “It is equally observed that the civic structural works going on are not for public interest but for the interest of a few persons who are abusing public trust.
“I therefore on behalf of the concerned citizens of Obudu Urban I and Obudu Local Government Area call on you to stop the ongoing works without further delay or be prepared to face the wrath of the public.
“It is disheartening to note that under your watch as the Chairman, you allowed people to encroach into the Civic Centre land area and defaced it by breaking down the fence.”
He called on the Chairman to “rise to this challenge and avoid a breakdown of law and order in the area,” by stopping “the ongoing works without further delay.”
The Divisional Police Officer, of the Nigerian Police Force; the Administrative Officer in charge of Nigeria’s Secret Police, the SSS; the office of the Paramount Ruler; the land office; Urban Ward 1 stakeholders and Chiefs are copied in the letter.
Findings by CrossRiverWatch reveal that the fence at the rear section of the civic center was broken in mid-June 2022. Also, the ornamental trees that were planted for beautification and shade, were uprooted.
Civil structural activities commencing in July 2022. These were halted sometime in December 2022. As of press time, it remained unclear whether work had resumed.
