Suspected Brake Failure Leaves Scores Dead, Cars Destroyed In Calabar

By Patrick Obia

Suspected brake failure is said to have left three persons dead and cars destroyed in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

The accident occurred today Wednesday 25th July along the IBB Way by CUDA, a few meters away from the Margaret Ekpo International Airport and a stone throw from Eta Agbor Roundabout in the evening hours.

The vehicle Ford Edge with registration number: LSR980FU Lagos, black with double exhaust, was driven by a lady who was said to have lost control of the brake, ran into a woman selling roadside chicken, roast plantains, and potatoes.

A pedestrian (female) and a man seated in a joint were not spared by the vehicle eyewitnesses say was on speed.

The vehicle also pulled down a concrete signboard and dragged the victims to a good number of meters where it crashed them against a fence.

Also, a red spider Toyota Camry XLE with plate number RSH271TU, Abuja was ramped onto by the failed brake Ford.

The suspected driver is said to have been taken into safety to avert mob actions before she was taken away to an unknown destination.

At the time of filing this report, men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had arrived at the scene and the casualties evacuated towards the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) axis while officers of the Nigerian Police Force arrived at the scene to control traffic and the already rowdy atmosphere.

When contacted, FRSC Sector Commander of Cross River State, Abdullahi Hassan said he was not in town but referred CrossRiverWatch to the Acting Sector Head of Public Enlightenment, Arc Akachukwu Imazue who said he will get back to CrossRiverWatch but never did.

This is coming 24 hours after a tree fell on a commercial minibus along the Murtala Mohammed Highway by SUBEB which left at least one person dead and many injured in Calabar.
