The founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism, FIJ, Fisayo Soyombo and an Editor with CrossRiverWatch, Jonathan Ugbal have charged students of the Department of Mass Communication in the University of Cross River State, UNICROSS, to pursue investigative journalism as a panacea to the ills in the society.

The duo gave the charge while sharing their experiences as investigative journalists with 400-level students of the Department as part of a legacy lecture series started by the Head of the Department, Mr. Cornelius Ellah.

The first guest lecturer, Mr. Soyombo in his lecture said Nigeria needs more investigative journalists and his decision to fly down to Calabar was to inspire those willing to accept that challenge of using journalism as a tool to better the society.

“Despite my schedule, I could not miss this invitation, because this country badly needs investigative journalists to keep the society in check and instill consciousness in the minds of the leaders. If I can inspire two people to take up this role at the end of today then I am fulfilled,” Mr. Soyombo said.

The second guest lecturer, Mr. Jonathan Ugbal while sharing his experiences in the field, averred that, “Investigative journalism is not only about seeking for answers but also questioning the answers.”

Mr. Ugbal, urged them to ensure that, “When investigating, do not set out to find wrong doings because you will definitely find them, set out to inform first, to learn from it, to educate and ensure the outcome of the story has a positive impact on the public.”

He also reminded the students of the basic editorial  principles that guide journalism which are truth, accuracy, objectivity, balance and fairness.

In all, the sessions were interactive and aspiring as most students would love to take the call to be watchdogs of the society.
