The Cross River State Council of the Nigerian Labor Congress, NLC has voted to join the nationwide protests to draw attention to what the labor center describes as “the hardship being meted out to Nigerians by unfriendly, unpeopled Policies by the Federal Government.”
This followed a resolution from the emergency State Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday afternoon in Calabar. A bulletin was issued and it was signed by the Secretary of the State’s Council, Comrade Odong Bassey Eke.
The Congress resolved that, “all affiliates are to mobilize and come out with all their members to NLC Secretariat by 7:00 AM tomorrow (Wednesday), 2nd of August,2023 for a protest rally.”
The bulletin urged Comrade members to note that the rally is, “a peaceful protest, meant to register our displeasure with the Government for causing hardship to Nigerians.”
The bulletin which said attendance, “shall be duly recorded,” also said Congress resolved that, “all members coming out for the rally must put on a Labor uniform.”
“Any Labor uniform, whether of individual unions or NLC would be accepted,” it read.
Furthermore, Congress which condemned the hardship in the Country, also, “enjoined workers, and Nigerians in general to stay strong and steadfast; as this hard period too shall be a thing of the past.”
It will be recalled that the national body of the NLC has issued a seven day ultimatum to the Government of the federation to address the hardship.
However, on Monday, President Bola Tinubu addressed the country, pleading for calm. However, NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero said the address is not the silver bullet the country needs at the time.
CrossRiverWatch will follow the rally as it happens and bring you live updates.
