NGOs Put Smiles On Pupils Faces, Give Classrooms A New Look

By Patrick Obia

ActionAid Nigeria in partnership with Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI) has given a course to smile to children and locals of Abredang community of Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State.

ActionAid Nigeria, a social justice organization working to eradicate poverty through gender equality and redistribution of wealth and power, funded the project while BRCI, a not-for-profit organization committed to promoting and safeguarding the rights of vulnerable children and indigent women in Cross River State, implemented it.

And on the 20th of November, 2023, the duo NGOs as part of its Local Rights Program (LRP) – a project aimed at reducing poverty and improving the socioeconomic status of women and children – donated school desks to the Community Primary School, Abredang where the children were previously made to sit on bare floors to learn.

The community and the school, which is situated in a hard-to-reach area, have a couple of challenges plaguing them;  ranging from unconducive learning classrooms, poor or no access to potable water in the community, as well as unequipped only health center in the Community.

ActionAid Nigeria and BRCI’s gesture came as a response to the need to encourage learning and improve the standard of education in the State.

The school is among a few public schools in the State that have suffered government neglect.

This is among many interventions both organizations ha e executed in the community and some selected LGAs in the State.

Shortly after the project was fully handed over to the Community and school, the school Head Teacher represented by Mr. Onate thanked ActionAid and BRCI for the intervention.

He expressed that: “We are highly grateful for your selfless intervention and the need to see that our children learn in a conducive environment.”

He asserted: “Education is the key to unlocking a brighter future, and we firmly believe that every child deserves an opportunity to learn and grow. By investing in their education, we are investing in the development of the community.”

The Village Head, represented by his assistant Chief Egwu, also appreciated the NGOs for the intervention as well as previous interventions carried out by the team in their community.

The excitement on the faces of the pupils and teachers was evident in the seats in their classrooms, as they noted that it had been a major limitation to smooth learning in the school.
