Lawmakers Call For Songhai Farm Revamp After Fire Outbreak

The Cross River State House of Assembly in a matter of urgent public interest has called on the State Government to take proactive steps towards revamping Songhai Farm after the recent fire outbreak.

In a plenary held Tuesday 30th, 2024 at the Assembly Complex the member representing Abi State Constituency and Deputy Leader, Hon. Davies Etta, raised a motion calling on the State Government to intervene in the fire incident that has caused a distraught in Songhai Farm in the State central of Itigidi.

The Lawmaker bewailed his experience when he embarked on an on-the-spot visit to the site over the weekend after he got wind of the fire incident.

The House in divergent reactions expressed displeasure over the poor state of the farm and other activities in the facilities.

Hon. Etta said, “Songhai Farms, in Imo State, is used for research, training and empowering local farmers, teaching them modern agricultural system and ways to adapt to 21st-century farming.

“In our dear State, Songhai Farm is meant to function the same way, to educate our peasant farmers and bring them to the limelight but, the reverse is the case.”

Hon. Ovat Agbor, a member representing Obubra1 State Constituency stated, “Each time I drive past where this farm is situated along Ugep-Abomege road, I see massive structures not put to effective use. It is heartbreaking to hear that fire recently caught the buildings.

“I have strongly supported that the State Government should take proactive steps toward revamping the facility, and putting it into optimal use, for the good and benefit of Cross Riverians.”

The House having adopted the resolutions resolved that the Cross River State Government should as a matter of necessity, embark on a holistic or sectoral rehabilitation of the Farm Center at Itigidi.

That the Governor should be deliberate in appointing an agronomist or related speciality with relevant experience as his Adviser to enable him set up a management system that can effectively utilize the facility.

That the Cross River State Government should as a matter of urgency take deliberate steps at establishing and/or making existing fire service units across the State to become operational to forestall further fire incidents on lives and properties.
