The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cross River State, Professor Augustine Angba on Thursday sought a commitment to education and ‘best behavior’ from freshers of the Varsity as the institution commences its multi-campus matriculation ceremony.

Prof. Angba while addressing matriculants in the Calabar main campus of the institution which houses seven faculties, said the students made the right choice to apply, “for an environment that boasts of very cerebral, competent and patriotic staff.”

He said the Varsity under him has experienced progress, ranking 7th best in the Country by Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan African rankings, hence the need for them to apply themselves to get the most out of the Institution.

“You have been told in your orientation that you would be tasked with having at least a 70% percent attendance in all lectures to be qualified to write exams. The impact of this is that the rules of the University do not tolerate absenteeism on the part of students,” he said.

The State-owned institution boss encouraged the freshers to desist from criminal behavior, adding; “Your matriculation today is only the beginning of your journey. You must know that the University graduates students in character and learning. You should develop a desire and a commitment to your studies, while also being on your best behavior.”

He informed them of the Feed One, Train One Student, (FOTOS) award and charged them to work hard towards benefitting while encouraging others to cultivate the habit of paying their school fees.

The VC stressed the need for the students to acquaint themselves with the students’ handbook to guide them while in the institution towards excellence and becoming good ambassadors of the citadel of learning.

The matriculation exercise, which is the 22nd in its series since the inception of the institution, continued later in the day at Obubra campus of the institution.

The Ogoja and Okuku campuses will play host to the academic ritual on Friday.

6,084 freshers and 66 direct Entry students are to undergo the important academic ritual across the four campuses of the University, bringing a total of 6,150 matriculants.
