The Alumni Association of the University of Cross River State, UNICROSS says the governing council of the Varsity as presently constituted should be immediately disbanded and investigated.

This is contained in a communique signed by the National Secretary, Njang Ndoma and issued on Wednesday following the National Executive Council meeting of the association which, among other things, sought a legal injunction to bar the funding of the activities of the council.

The communique, obtained by CrossRiverWatch, says the current council has failed to attract any project to the institution while putting pressure on the Varsity’s finances by calling sittings that are not productive.

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL (NEC) MEETING OF UNICROSS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION HELD ON WEDNESDAY APRIL 24,2024

Arising from the emergency National Executive Council (NEC), held on Wednesday April 24, 2024, the following resolutions were reached:

1. That the University of Cross River State Establishment Law is supreme and must be respected by all organs of the University, at all times.

2. That the governing council as presently constituted incapable, incompetent and not serving the interest of the University.

3. That since the inauguration of the current council on the 6th of June 2020, the council has attracted NOTHING to the University but rather has been putting pressure on the finances of the University by calling unnecessary sittings to draw allowances to enrich members.

4. Call on the Governor and visitor to the University, His Excellency, Sen. Prince Bassey Otu to IMMEDIATELY DISSOLVE the governing council and reconstitute it to bring seasoned people who understand the workings of the University system and with capacity to attract funds, projects, and to formulate policies for smooth implementation of the “People’s First Agenda” for the institution.

5. Call on His Excellency, the Governor and Visitor to the University to direct thorough investigation of all activities of the governing council members as it relates to contracts approvals, execution and the resources expended in holding the unnecessary frequent sittings.

6. Direct the Legal team of the association to IMMEDIATELY institute a LEGAL ACTION to stop the University management from further funding of council meetings, activities and claims until all issues involving the council are resolved.

7. That the legal action against the council should also seek to address all allegations of illegality labelled against the council including blatant abuse of, and the disregard for the University Establishment laws.

8. That all these actions should be taken pending the final decision of His Excellency, the Governor and Visitor to the University concerning the governing council.

9. Commend and reaffirm support for the efforts and actions of the Governor Bassey Otu’s administration to restructure and reposition the University.
