No fewer than three trucks said to be laden with palliatives have been escorted out of Calabar, the Cross River State capital by a combined team of the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Police Force.
This comes amidst news report of Governor Bassey Otu visiting the warehouse of the State Emergency Management Agency to confirm that all palliatives were distributed.
The trucks which drove via the Murtala Muhammed highway were photographed near Calabar Calabar roundabout at a few minutes past 9:00PM.
Meanwhile, aides of Governor Otu ramped up efforts to discredit the protest against hunger and bad governance billed for August 1st to 10th while Dr. Lufreda Emeka, the wife of the immediate past Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area was nearly lynched at Edima Otop market while sharing rice.
“She came with rice in a vehicle and was sharing five cups to people at Edima Otop market asking them not to join the nationwide protests and she was nearly lynched,” an eyewitness (name withheld) told CrossRiverWatch.
The Special Adviser, General Duties to Governor Otu, Akiba Ekpenyong Esq had earlier in the week invited On – Air Personalities from different radio stations in Calabar to accompany him to see how palliatives were been distributed while urging them to also speak against the protests.
Other aides have done similar with Organized Labor in Cross River with the National Youth Council of Nigeria saying in a press conference held at the Transcorp Metropolitan Hotel that they won’t be joining the protest.
In a related development, the State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Alphonsus Eba said only his party is allowed to protest and announced a solidarity protest with the Governor for August 1.
Meanwhile, protesters say they will gather peacefully at the Freedom Park next to Mary Slessor roundabout by 9:00AM.
