A suspected thief who allegedly attempted to vandalize an electricity transformer was caught and lynched by an angry mob in the night hours at Atu by Palm Street in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State.
According to eyewitness accounts obtained by CrossRiverWatch, the man was reportedly apprehended while trying to tamper with the transformer that serves the community. The intervention was said to have happened swiftly as residents raised alarm over the attempted act.
A resident who confirmed the incident in anonymity stated: “A suspected thief was reportedly caught around midnight at Atu Street by Palm Street while attempting to tamper with a power transformer.
“Community members notified the authorities, and the situation is now under investigation. Everyone is advised to stay alert and report suspicious activities to the police.”
Residents who woke up this morning said “they were shocked to find the charred remains of the suspect lying on the roadside, even as normal activities gradually returned to the area.”
Authorities have repeatedly warned residents against jungle justice, urging communities to report suspects to law enforcement agencies rather than taking laws into their hands.
