A few hours after CrossRiverWatch published its investigative report exposing forced labour, intimidation, and humiliation of civilians living inside Eburutu Barracks in Calabar, Cross River State, a man Ali Bello, has threatened CrossRiverWatch Reporter.
He made the threat on a WhatsApp group where the investigation was shared. The investigation captioned: “Inside Eburutu Barracks: The Hidden System of Forced Labour on Civilians in Cross River” detailing how residents of Mammy Market community are subjected to compulsory labour, midnight arrests, and illegal levies by soldiers within the barracks.
In the WhatsApp threat, Ali Bello, described as a “soja” in his bio, warned that: “bloody lie man please stay to your boundaries please and with due respect post what is your own business” (sic).

The Army authorities in the state are yet to react to the report and the recent threat.
Meanwhile, huge reactions have trailed the investigation and many have applauded it, questioning why the inhumane treatment by the soldiers on civilians. Both netizen and human rights advocates have described the practice as modern day slavery, calling on the government to beam a satellite on the investigation to curtail further human rights abuse.
