An image generated using Artificial Intelligence (AI) by unknown user has caused hysteria in Cross River State, Nigeria.
The generated image has an inscription “Calabar South get ready”, shows a terrorist-looking man raising the placard above his head.
With recent terrorists attacks and kidnapping in various part of the country, social media users and residents adjudged it to be terrorists invasion.
Refuting the false image with analysis, the Cross River State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, said the image is unverified and should not be regarded as an official communication or a true representation of any security situation in Calabar South or any part of Cross River State.
The image circulated more on one of Meta’s platforms – WhatsApp, the Command’s spokesman, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said a review of the image shows visible signs that raise doubts about its authenticity. Notably, it carries a ‘Meta AI’ watermark, indicating that it may have been created using AI.
ASP Sunday said while this alone does not conclusively determine its origin, it raises serious concerns regarding the authenticity and reliability of the content.
Probing the image further, the police noted that the image contains no identifiable location, official insignia, or other verifiable details linking it to Calabar South LGA.
The Command advised the public not to share or rely on unverified content capable of causing unnecessary fear, panic, or confusion, urging residents to obtain information only from official and credible sources and to disregard the image in its entirety.
The law enforcement Agency assured residents that they are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all.
