The Office of the Deputy Governor of Cross River State has dismissed viral crash reports alleging that the Deputy Governor Peter Odey was involved in an automobile accident, describing the report as inaccurate and exaggerated.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, the Deputy Governor’s Press Secretary, Fred Abua, said the incident occurred on Sunday, 9th August, while the Deputy Governor was returning from Northern Cross River State where he represented the Governor at the stakeholder engagement in respect of the concession of the Obudu Ranch Resort.
The statement explained that while the convoy was passing through Yakurr Local Government, the driver of the Government House Press bus lost control and ran into the barricades at an Army checkpoint.
The statement clarified that the vehicle was a Toyota Hiace purchased brand new in 2024, contrary to reports that it was an old vehicle.
It further stated that no other vehicle was involved in the incident and no life was lost, although some occupants of the press bus sustained minor injuries.
The affected persons were immediately evacuated from the scene and taken for medical attention. The statement added that all the staff involved were in stable condition and had since resumed work.
The Deputy Governor emphasized that he was not involved in the incident and continued his journey safely to Calabar.
The Office of the Deputy Governor urged the public to disregard the viral report and rely on official communications from the Cross River State Government for accurate information while appreciating the concerns of well-meaning citizens and the media, adding that he remains committed to transparency and timely dissemination of factual information.
