The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 29-year-old man, Saviour Otu Adim, over the alleged murder of his six-year-old stepdaughter, Miss Goodness Ekpo Okon, in Bakassi Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Cross River State Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah Akata, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, August 28, 2026.
According to the police, the incident was reported at about 8:30 a.m. by Mrs Itoro Udofia, who alleged that the suspect assaulted the child, resulting in her death.
Preliminary investigation, the police said, indicated that the suspect had allegedly accused the deceased child of being a witch before the fatal incident.
The suspect has been taken into police custody as investigators commence efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
The remains of the deceased, according to the police has been deposited at a mortuary for autopsy, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Calabar, for further investigation.
The Command urged members of the public, particularly parents, guardians and caregivers, to remain vigilant in protecting children and to report suspected cases of child abuse promptly to the appropriate authorities.
