The Cross River State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with an alleged attempted rape of a 12-year-old girl in Calabar.
The suspects, Moris Monday, aged 68, and Asuquo Effiom, aged 70, were arrested on Sunday 23 August, 2026, following a report by the victim’s father.
The Command’s spokesman ASP Sunday Eitokpah said preliminary investigation indicates that the victim alleged that Moris Monday, a shoe repairer, on two separate occasions, 13 and 14 August 2026, allegedly lured her into his room and attempted to sexually assault her.
She also alleged that on 22 August 2026, Asuquo Effiom similarly lured her into his room and attempted to sexually assault her.
Following receipt of the complaint, Police investigators proceeded to the Hokins Road area by Thomas Henshaw Junction, where the suspects were found in the custody of community members and were taken into Police custody.
According to the Command, the suspects have made statements to the Police and denied the allegations. The victim has been referred to a government-approved medical facility for medical examination.
“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigation and necessary legal action,” ASP Sunday added.
The Command assures the public that the matter will be handled professionally and in accordance with the law, as further developments and investigation progresses will be communicated.
