The Cross River State Police Command has commenced investigation into the death of an unidentified woman found desd in a hotel room along Clifford Street, Calabar South Local Government Area, with investigators searching for a male guest believed to have lodged with her hours before the discovery.
The Police said the incident was reported at about 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, by the hotel director, accompanied by the manager and the receptionist on duty.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah Akata, preliminary findings indicated that an unidentified man checked into Room 2 of the hotel at about 8:00 p.m. on Monday with a female companion whose identity remains unknown.
The male guest was reportedly not properly documented when he was admitted into the hotel, a development that investigators are now examining as part of efforts to establish what happened before the woman’s death.
Eitokpah said the receptionist later noticed that the door to the room was open in the early hours of Tuesday and, assuming the occupants had checked out, entered the room to switch off the ceiling fan.
It was upon switching on the light that he allegedly discovered the woman lying unresponsive on the bed.
Police investigators who visited the scene reportedly observed apparent marks of violence on the woman’s face and neck and documented the scene for further investigation.
Her body was later taken to the General Hospital, Calabar, where she was confirmed dead and deposited at the mortuary pending further medical or forensic examination.
Police also recovered some tablets from the deceased’s handbag as exhibits, but stressed that no link has been established between the medication and her death.
Meanwhile, the receptionist has been taken into custody for questioning over the circumstances surrounding the guests’ admission and the events leading to the discovery of the deceased.
The Police, however, clarified that the receptionist’s detention does not amount to a declaration of guilt.
The Command has also commenced efforts to identify and locate the unidentified male guest who was last reportedly seen with the deceased.
Eitokpah said the Commissioner of Police, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, directed that the investigation be conducted professionally and objectively to establish the identity of the deceased, the actual cause and circumstances of her death, and the possible roles of anyone connected to the incident.
The Police appealed to the public to avoid speculation and the circulation of unverified claims that could compromise the investigation or prejudice the rights of persons connected with the case.
The Command further urged anyone with credible information capable of helping investigators identify the deceased or locate the male guest to contact the nearest police station or the Cross River State Police Command through its established communication channels.
