The African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Cross River State, Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo, has called for an urgent investigation into allegations that equipment procured for the postponed 2026 National Census is being diverted for political purposes in Akamkpa and Biase Local Government Areas.
The call was contained in a statement issued by Mr. Archibong Eyo, spokesperson to the ADC governorship candidate.
Eyo said the campaign was concerned by allegations made by the Cross River Coalition for Democratic Accountability and Good Governance that census equipment was allegedly being distributed as campaign gifts to APC candidates in the two local government areas.
He held that public assets should not be used for partisan political purposes and called for relevant authorities to establish the facts surrounding the allegations.
The ADC campaign urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the matter, secure the equipment in question and ensure accountability if any wrongdoing is established.
It also called on the National Population Commission (NPC) to provide clarification on the whereabouts of the census materials and explain how the equipment is being handled following the postponement of the census.
The statement advised that if the allegations are proven, those responsible should face appropriate legal consequences.
