Residents Call For Completion Of Over Two Decades Abandoned Bridge Project In Yala LGA

By Christiana Oku-Geni

Residents of Alifokpa, Yache in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State are drawing state government’s attention for the completion of an unfinished bridge project that poses difficulties for road users travelling through the area.

The bridge known as Akreha (Okpoku) has a history of problems stretching back several decades.

The original bridge was built with wood and iron railings during the colonial era. By 2013, it was described as old and in a dangerous condition.

Vanguard reported that heavy rainfall had swept away the bridge, cutting off several villages and disrupting the transportation of farm produce.

March- April 2024, the old bridge remained a concern, and a new reinforced-concrete bridge was under construction beside it. The bridge’s problems have been documented for at least 13 years, from 2013 to 2026, while the original structure is described as dating back to the colonial era.

The bridge, which has yet to be completed, is a source of concern because of the potential risks and inconvenience faced by residents and other road users, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

Residents say an incomplete bridge can affect the movement of people, goods and services, making everyday activities more difficult for communities that depend on the route and where access is limited or unsafe, as residents may experience delays while transporting farm produce, accessing essential services or travelling to neighboring communities.

The situation also raises questions about the importance of proper planning, regular supervision and timely completion of public infrastructure projects.

Bridges and roads are essential to community development because they connect people, support local businesses and improve access to schools, healthcare facilities and markets.

The community called for appropriate safety measures and as well as help reduce the risk of accidents among pedestrians, motorists and other road users.
