Governor Bassey Otu has directed all members of the State Executive Council and political appointees in Cross River State who intend to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign from their positions on or before March 26, 2026.
The directive, aimed at ensuring focus and accountability in governance ahead of the 2027 elections, was issued during the State Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday.
According to a press release from the Office of the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Linus Obogo, the decision is designed to separate governance from political ambition and promote ethical standards in public service.
Governor Otu emphasized that public office must not be used as a platform for personal political pursuits, insisting that those with electoral ambitions must step aside in the interest of transparency and effective service delivery. He noted that the directive aligns with democratic principles and global best practices, ensuring a level playing field for all aspirants ahead of the 2027 polls.
“This directive is not punitive; it is principled,” the governor stated, adding that it is intended to safeguard the integrity of government institutions while allowing aspirants to pursue their ambitions without conflict of interest.
He stressed the need for undistracted governance, stating that his administration remains committed to delivering on its mandate, strengthening economic diversification, and improving internally generated revenue across the state.
Governor Otu called for full compliance from affected officials, urging them to prioritize accountability, discipline, and service to the people, while reaffirming that the progress of Cross River State must always take precedence over personal ambition.
