A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former House of Assembly aspirant, Chief Bassey Edet Asuquo, has called for greater inclusion of the people of Ikot Offiong in the political and developmental affairs of Cross River State.
Asuquo made the appeal while reflecting on the state of the border community during an interview in Calabar following activities marking his birthday celebration.
The APC stalwart said that despite years of displacement, conflict and hardship, the people of Ikot Offiong have remained loyal, peaceful and committed to the progress of Cross River State, expressing hope that government would pay greater attention to the community’s needs.
According to him, residents of the area have consistently contributed to the political development of the state and supported successive governments, adding that many people in the community feel they have not received commensurate attention in terms of political representation and development.
“We want to be part of Cross River State. We want to be part of the progress. We want to contribute. We are willing to offer our services in whichever way to the progress and development of Cross River State,” he said.
Asuquo, who hails from Ikot Offiong in Odukpani Local Government Area of the state, described the community as resilient despite its long history of displacement and border-related challenges.
He said the people have remained united and hopeful, choosing to focus on future opportunities rather than past difficulties.
According to him, Ikot Offiong possesses enormous agricultural potential, including fertile farmland and favourable climatic conditions that could contribute significantly to the state’s economic growth if properly harnessed.
“We have been blessed with natural resources. We have some of the best farmlands and a conducive environment for agriculture. We believe that in the future, Ikot Offiong will contribute positively to the development of Cross River State and Nigeria,” he stated.
The APC chieftain urged the state government to deepen its engagement with the community and implement programs capable of addressing local challenges while creating opportunities for residents.
While acknowledging that government faces competing demands and developmental challenges, he appealed for increased support to communities affected by displacement and years of neglect.
Asuquo also expressed optimism about the future of Cross River state under the administration of Governor Bassey Otu, noting that the government had initiated projects aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.
He, however, urged the administration to intensify efforts toward ensuring that all communities benefit from development initiatives and enjoy a sense of belonging.
“We believe the government should continue to work towards the development of the people and ensure that Cross Riverians have a sense of purpose, dignity and belonging,” he said.
Chief Bassey called on party members to remain united and committed to the collective goals of the party, stressing that internal cohesion would strengthen efforts to advance development across the state.
Ikot Offiong, a border community in Odukpani Local Government Area, has over the years experienced displacement and other challenges arising from territorial disputes, with community leaders repeatedly calling for greater government intervention and support.
