Police Nabs Suspected Fake Medical Doctor In Calabar

By Christopher Iyang

The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 39-year-old man, Udeme Emmanuel Ekpeme, for allegedly posing as a medical doctor.

He is also accused operating an illegal mobile clinic, and defrauding members of the public with false promises of employment at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).

The suspect was apprehended by officers attached to the Uwanse Division in Calabar South following a complaint filed by a victim, Mrs. Edemawan Samuel, who accused him of collecting five hundred thousand (500,000) Naira after claiming he could secure jobs for her children at UCTH.

According to the Command’s spokesman, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly used the false claim to deceive the complainant into parting with the money. During the operation, officers recovered medical equipment and other items believed to be linked to his activities.

The Command said the Commissioner of Police has ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the full scope of the suspect’s alleged operations and identify any additional victims or accomplices.

According to the police, the suspect remains in custody while investigations continue and will be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded and sufficient evidence is established.

The Command also urged members of the public to be cautious of individuals who promise employment opportunities in exchange for money, stressing that genuine recruitment into government institutions follows official procedures and should not involve unofficial payments.
