By Joy Okpa

There was tension at the popular Watt Market, Calabar on Thursday June 25, 2026, after a disagreement between a commercial driver and some street youths over parking.

The commercial driver had stopped briefly to let passenger alit. Within a twinkle of an eye, a group of youths approached him and accused him of parking in an unauthorized location.

The disagreement escalated as the group which was not ascertained if they are members of a taskforce or not, started hitting the vehicle and yelling at the driver

The argument and rain of verbal abuses later turned into a physical confrontation, causing some damage to the car.

The chaotic scene invited men of the Nigeria Police Force who arrived and tried to maintain tranquility. Though the police men attempted to arrest the driver but their efforts were futile as concerned traders waded in as messiahs and prevented his arrest.

They argued that the driver’s sins should be forgiven while the youths who turned his car into panel beaters should be arrested and made to pay for damages.

The traders noted that the mobs are notorious for such action of preying on innocent commercial drivers.

After the incident had been laid to rest, market leaders advised drivers and traders to remain peaceful and follow parking rules to prevent similar incidents in the future.
