Fear Grips Calabar Residents As Man Is Found Lifeless In Water Channel

By Joy Okpa

Fear has gripped residents of Elijah Henshaw off Palm Street, in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, following the discovery of the lifeless body of a man in a drainage channel.

The discovery made on Friday, July 17, 2026, attracted residents who gathered in small groups as heavy rainfall continues to fall in Calabar.

The body was seen floating in the water channel before becoming trapped against a stone.

Some residents told CrossRiverWatch that they were reluctant to recover the body for fear of being wrongly accused of involvement in the man’s death or being invited by the police for questioning.

They, however, noted that if the body which is covered is uncovered and properly examined, the deceased could be identified and his family traced.

The residents called on relevant authorities, such as the Ministry of Environment and other emergency response agencies, to evacuate the body without delay, warning that prolonged exposure could lead to decomposition or cause the body to be washed to another location by floodwaters.

As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the deceased and the cause of his death is not ascertained.
