Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Rashid Bello Afegbua, has officially assumed duty as the 34th Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 6 Headquarters, Calabar, with a mandate to strengthen security, deepen community policing and enhance inter-agency collaboration across the states under the zone.
The development was announced in a press release issued on Monday, August 3, 2026, by the Zonal Public Relations Officer, DSP Jefferson Osupe, on behalf of the AIG.
According to the statement, Zone 6 Headquarters formally welcomed the new AIG following his deployment to oversee policing activities within the zone.
The police said his appointment is expected to reinforce ongoing security operations through improved strategic leadership, stronger collaboration among security agencies, enhanced community policing and more effective policing across the zone.
AIG Afegbua, a legal practitioner and seasoned police officer, holds a Bachelor of Science (Education) in Economics from the then Bendel State University, now Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma; a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B Hons.) holder from the University of Calabar, and a Barrister-at-Law (B.L.) qualification from the Nigerian Law School, Bwari, Abuja.
Born on August 22, 1968, into the Afegbua Royal Family of Okpella in Edo State, he joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in 1992 after completing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Cross River State.
The statement noted that throughout his career, AIG Afegbua has distinguished himself in operational policing, police administration, intelligence-led policing and the deployment of technology-driven policing strategies.
Before his latest appointment, he served as Commissioner of Police, Department of Training, Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he coordinated key capacity-building program and championed police reform initiatives. He also previously served with distinction as Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command.
According to the police, the new Zonal Commander has attended several professional and leadership courses within and outside Nigeria, including program at the Police Staff College, Jos, the National Institute of Police Studies, INTERPOL, the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center (KAIPTC), as well as international forums on digital rights, human rights and strategic leadership.
He is also a member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP) and the Institute of Corporate Administration (ICAD).
The statement added that AIG Afegbua remains committed to professionalism, institutional development and the ongoing reforms of the Nigeria Police Force in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police.
