Cross River-born student Akanya Thomas Akanya has been reportedly poisoned by a fellow student in Federal University Wukari, Taraba State.
Akanya Thomas who hails from Abanyom Clan, Osibi-Etikpe Community, Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River, was said to have been poisoned on Sunday, September 7, 2026.
The suspect, a second year student identified as Lugard, had invited him to a joint opposite the university and gave him a drink containing unknown mixtures.
Akanya collapsed shortly after taking it. He was taken to the hostel and abandoned where he later died in what appears to be a conspiracy.
During interrogation at the university’s security unit, Lugard reportedly admitted orally and in writing that he committed the crime.
However, when the school handed over the case to the police for investigation, the matter was twisted to be that Akanya was sick and Lugard helped him to his hotel.
CrossRiverWatch made efforts to get the Taraba State Police Command respond on the matter but didn’t get the needed response.
The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Victor Mshelizah said he was not aware of the incident. He promised to place a call to the Divisional Police Officer of Wukari Division for details and revert in 30 minutes.
However, more than 24 hours on he is yet to revert even at the time of filing this report. About four-five calls at intervals placed to his line have gone unanswered.
Meanwhile, an insider in the Command with a full knowledge of the matter refused to comment with a reason that the matter is under investigation. The source however, referred CrossRiverWatch to the incommunicado PPRO.
