The Management of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), has announced plans to evacuate and conduct a mass burial of abandoned and unclaimed corpses in its mortuary.
In a public notice dated September 30, 2026, the hospital management said the decision became necessary following the prolonged retention of corpses whose statutory 90-day period had elapsed without being claimed by relatives or depositors.
According to the notice, the continued retention of the corpses has caused congestion and placed pressure on the hospital’s available mortuary space and facilities.
UCTH urged relatives and depositors of affected corpses to come forward and claim them.
Management warned that all unclaimed corpses after October 21, 2026, will be evacuated for mass burial without further notice.
The hospital said the measure was necessary to ease the pressure, ensure proper mortuary management and maintain appropriate standards of care and service delivery.
