Cross River Governor Orders Immediate Payment Of May Salary

It is very hard for me to understand why a government would owe workers their earned salaries. Unless a government is bankrupt, there is no justification for such irresponsibility. In this regard the new governor’s action is commendable. One way to forestall this practice of essentially borrowing money from workers by fiat is have a policy by which unpaid salary automatically becomes a loan from the worker to the government or employer and attracts the possible interest to be paid to the worker in addition to the salary that was not paid when due.

There should be a punitive fine for salaries not paid for more than 90 days. A policy such as this or any variation thereof will stop once and for all, the financial abuse of workers. Where did the money used to clear the salary arrears up to April suddenly come from that couldn’t be found to pay the workers when the salary was due? For now let us commend governor Ayade and hope that this ugly practice is finally ended permanently.
