A Cross River born fierce legal practitioner, Mba E. Ukweni, has been shortlisted for the award of the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

Ukweni who was also recently coronated the royal title of an Ntufam in the Qua Kingdom, hails from Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State.

He is presently the Chairman, Law Reform Commission, Cross River State. And until his appointment to head the Law Reform Commission, he was the Principal Partner of Mba E. Ukweni & Associates.

The rank of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria is a privilege reserved primarily for distinguished advocates in full time legal practise and those who have contributed immensely to the development of the legal profession in Nigeria.

The rank may also be conferred on academic members of the legal profession who have made substantial contributions to the practice of law through teaching, research and publications.

Ntufam Mba Ukweni had before now unsuccessfully attempted to clinch the silk title for about four times, with the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee, LPPC (the committee responsible for the conferment of the rank) always reminding him that the title was a privilege and not a right.

It will be recalled that one Eno Iyamba, Esq. in a piece published on crossriverwatch.com entitled Exclusion of Cross River Lawyers from New Senior Advocates 2015 and Matters Arising, had made a case against the deliberate refusal of the LPPC to confer the rank on qualified and deserving legal practitioners especially from the South-South region of Nigeria and Cross River State in particular.

For the year 2016, two senior lawyers from the Calabar Bar (Ntufam Mba Ukweni and Chief Orok Ironbar) were initially shortlisted at the first and second stages of the exercise, but only Ntufam Ukweni made the final list of 22 as published by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court & Secretary of the LPPC, Alhaji Gambo Saleh.

Ntufam Mba E. Ukweni was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1993 and he has consistently practised law for about 23 years now.

He is a dogged and resourceful legal practitioner based in Calabar, Cross River State and diligently represented the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 Governorship Election Petition in Calabar.

The learned SAN will be decorated with the royal silk come September, 2016.
