African Students Union Awards Cross River Health Commissioner

The African Students Union Parliament (ASUP) has awarded Cross River Health Commissioner, Inyang Asibong with the African Servant Leadership Award and a medal of honor for her contributions towards nation building in the health sector.

The award, said to be the highest issued by the organization which comprises of higher institutions of learning in the African continent was presented recently to Asibong by the speaker of the parliament Mohammed Coulibaly who said they are in Nigeria for a drug abuse sensitization program across some selected institutions of higher learning across the country.

Represented by the majority leader, Edem Ayi, Coulibaly lauded the efforts of the Commissioner whom he described as a “Role model and mentor in life as well as the ministry of health.” He also applauded the staff of the ministry for their efforts geared towards ensuring quality healthcare delivery in the state pointing out that they have been watching the ministry from afar.

The Director of Food Safety in the Ministry, Joseph Ingwu, who responded on behalf of the ministry thanked the delegates and expressed their delight for the recognition, and promised to continue to do contribute their quota in ensuring a healthy Cross River state for all.

To most Cross Riverians and Nigerians, I believe, the award that really matters the most is that awarded by the people that are being served when government actions has brought positive changes to their lives and communities.

Recently I called on the commissioner to (i) make available for free application forms for admission into the state schools of midwifery, (ii) reduction from N6,500 to N1,000 of processing fee, and (iii) creation of additional screening and interview center at the northern part of the state to which there was no response! This is not serving the people that you are appointed to do.

The failure of the health ministry to take into consideration the onerous responsibilities they subjected the poor applicants to and their plight especially those from far away northern part of Cross River state is deplorable that should be condemned in the harshest terms.

It is unfortunate that government activities such as citing of industries, screening of applicants for employment and admission into institutions of learning, and many others are being conducted in Calabar as if though Cross River State is made up of only Calabar!!!

It is pathetic.
