The All Progressive Congress (APC) in Cross River State has stated that it will not be involved in any form of transitional committee the State Government is proposing after the tenure of the 18 Local Government Chairmen expires.
The party which described the non-conduct of Local Government elections in the State as illegal said its respects the country’s constitution and will not get its hand soiled.
The party’s position was disclosed by its Publicity Secretary in the state, Mr. Mens Ikpeme who was a guest in a weekly radio program “The Dialogue with Agba Jalingo” on Hit 95.9 FM Calabar and monitored by our newsroom.
His words, “This Country has a Constitution, section 7 of that Constitution, first schedule says that Local Government must have democratically elected Local Government personnel to make it a legitimate Government. So if the Government takes their time to delay these things they are openly violating the Nigerian constitution”.
Furthermore, he said: “We expect the Government to understand that things are done systematically and not for them to cry foul because of funds”, saying the Government is using the guise of no funds to tweak the game in their favor.
Ikpeme stated that his party has been pushing for the conduct of the elections. “We held a seminar sometime in Channel View. I was there in that seminar and I stood up to ask the Chairman of CROSIEC whether he is ready for the elections, if his ready let him tell us the modalities. He openly said yes they were ready for the election”.
