Cross River Spends N350 Million on IFAD Programs

In its bid to develop Agro-Micro Skills economy, the Cross River State government said it has spent over three hundred and fifty million Naira on the implementation of International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. James Aniyom, stated this during the empowerment scheme for young farmers under the IFAD, FGN and NDDC community based natural resources management program in the Agricultural development program in Yala local government area of the State.

The Commissioner who maintained that the project aims at improving the livelihoods and living conditions of communities through institutional strengthening by community development fund intervention, was obliged to ensure gender equality progression for the one Hundred and Twenty five Thousand (125,000) beneficiaries.

He stated that 7,549 male and 5,813 female farmers have so far been trained; adding that this has made a significant impact in the development and empowerment of farmers in the State .

The Commissioner also said the program has so far provided communities, with bore holes, aggro-processing mills, construction of roads/culverts, raising of nursery for seeds for farmers to cultivate their farms amongst others.

The National Coordinator of the program Mrs. Irene Jambo Ibeakuzie, represented by Engr. Sam Abiodun, noted that the program has complemented the policy of the State Government in the development of the Rural Areas.

She disclosed that Cross River State within the past six years has served as a model in the Niger Delta due to the cordial partnership between the State and Local Government.

The National Coordinator commended the Local Government and State for their timely release of their counterpart funds.
