The stretch of road between Abuochiche in Bekwara Local Government and Mbok junction has worsened as most portions along the stretch have become impassable.
The spots at the Afrike junction, Monaya river, Ogoja junction and Mbok junction are now crater ridden and have become scenes where vehicles are regularly upturned.
When CrossRiverWatch went along that route over the weekend, many vehicles especially trucks were seen sprawled inside the deep craters on the road with their goods especially agricultural products spilted into the ditches.
Some of the travelers who spoke to CrossRiverWatch begged the government to “have mercy and do something about this road.”
Mr. Ajom Ndoma told our reporter that “My brother, I pass through this road every three days and this experience is horrifying. Accidents happen here on a daily bases and criminals also ambush travelers here on a regular basis but those in government who are responsible for the repair seem not to care at all. It will be a great delight and relief for most of us if government can look in this direction and fix this road.”
Mrs. Eze Nnamdi, a trader in Obudu said: “I travel to Abakaliki to buy my goods regularly. They have been occasions here when armed robbers just stroll out from the bush and stop our vehicle early in the morning to rob us. But we can’t sit down because of what to eat. We are begging those in government not to steal all the money. They should steal and remain some that they will use to fix this road so that we can continue to go about suffering and looking for our daily bread.”
The trans-African highway from Abakaliki passes through Mbok junction down to Ikom leaving the stretch from Abuochihe to Mbok junction in a terrible state and there seems to be no plans for it in the near future.
