An unknown soldier in the company of Policemen on Friday morning shot dead one Effiom Etim Efiom popularly known as ‘etete’ at the Murtala Muhammed highway close to MCC junction.

Etete, a tricycle operator, according to an eyewitness, Eustace Ugah (not actual name) is said to have attempted to resist arrest by the policemen attached to Homeland Security; a security unit created by the Cross River State Government when two more trucks with policemen and soldiers arrived the scene.

“A soldier came down from the truck and they pointed to the guy and said ‘this is him’ and he corked his gun and shot at him four times,” Eustace told CrossRiverWatch.

“They then drove away and came back about two minutes later and took the corpse away,” he added.

Residents close to Etete say he has been terrorising the neighborhood while police sources say he was chased down for stealing and is a suspected member of the Baggars confraternity.

Meanwhile, a Facebook user, Holyns Hogan claimed that it was men attached to Homeland Security that shot Etete dead at his residence.

He wrote: “The incident occurred about 10: 40 am today Friday, July 13, 2018. A reliable source and brother to the deceased informed that prior to that moment he invited his lawyer and the police to obtain statement from his late brother, over an issue that happened yesterday between him and one unregistered Keke rider at the Esien Town Keke Tricycle Park, located at Essien Town by Murtalah Mohammed Highway, Calabar(sic).

“Another reliable source and eye witness accounted that the deceased and his boys beat and injured the affected Keke rider the day before for refusing to formally register with the Keke Union at the park. That led to the involvement of the Homeland Security Service men, whose attached Soldier eventually shot and killed Etete at sight in public glare(sic).”

The Army and the office of the state security adviser which coordinates the homeland security operations is yet to comment on the matter.
