‘It Should Not Have Taken This Long’ – NBA On Justice Akon Ikpeme’s Confirmation

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olumide Akpata has commended the decision of the Cross River House of Assembly to confirm Justice Akon Ikpeme as the substantive Chief Judge of the State’s High Court.

The Assembly in what was a U-Turn from their resolution number 45 of March 2, 2020 wherein they rejected her recommendation by the National Judicial Council, confirmed Justice Akon Ikpeme on January 22, 2021, which was 322 days after, with the Speaker of the Assembly, Eteng Jones telling newsmen that the legislators unanimously voted in her favor.

And, Mr. Akpata took to Facebook to express his pleasure. He wrote: “The news of the confirmation of Hon Justice Akon Ikpeme as the substantive Chief Judge of Cross River State by the House of Assembly is very welcome news.

“It should not have taken this long but this is a victory for the rule of law and the doctrine of supremacy of the Constitution.

Her confirmation hearing on January 22 was the third of its nature as the House had also rejected her on June 2, 2020.

In its resolution with reference number, HA/CRS/S/60/VOL.X/347 dated March 2, 2020, the House had, “agreed that any appointment to the office of the Chief Judge of the State should be confirmed for persons if unquestionable character and in overall interest of peace and security of the State.”
