CrossRiverWatch has received information on the demise of Utum Etowa, Personal Assistant, Media and Research to Senator Liyel Imoke, the Cross River State Governor.
Utum Etowa who served as the shadow Chief Press Secretary to the Governor since 2007 took ill early 2013 and was flown to India by Governor Imoke for medical aid but the ailment seemingly defied the efforts of the Indian doctors and their drugs and eventually took the life of the young man late last month.
“We received a phone call from India intimating us of his death. He had diabetes and refused to follow the doctor’s advise for a long time until the situation became intolerable. Before Oga could release money for his treatment, the situation had already gone out of hand. His body has just been brought home and burial arrangments will soon be communicated.” a source close to government told CrossRiverWatch.
Etowa who is from Ugep in the Central Senatorial District of the state lapsed into coma in April and was on life support for many months in the Indian hospital while doctors battled to save his life.
“His case amply demonstrates the love Senator Imoke has for his aides and indeed the people of the state. He personally ensured the man got the best medical care and lots of money was expended on him as the governor believes that life is precious and should be cared for adequately.” Our source said.
Etowa who was from Ugep in Yakkur Local Government Area did not marry and had no kids.
“We do not speak evil of the dead but he made some mistakes which should be a lesson to us journalists”. Another source said.
