Cross River born, Destiny Ogar was early this week announced as one of the recipients of the tech giant, Amazon’s $10 million Computer Scholarship for university study.

The scholarship, awarded as Amazon Future Engineer, is according to the company “a thorough childhood-to-career program aimed at increasing access to computer science education for children and young adults from underserved and underrepresented communities.”

Ogar, a senior at the Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women, in the United States of America, will use the $40,000 to pursue her academics at North Carolina’s A&T State University.

Ogar had to care for her mother during the pandemic while attending classes online but was never deterred as she performed excellently in school and was involved in extracurricular activities.

Speaking to Amazon, Ogar said “Without this scholarship, I likely would not be able to attend my dream school,” she said.

“A lot of people may not enter this field because they don’t see someone that looks like them,” she said. “People of colour are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), so I hope that future generations of Black women will see themselves in me and as someone they can look up to.”
