The National Population Commission is set to conduct a population and housing trial census ahead of 2023.

The Cross River State Commissioner, retired Navy Captain Charles Ogwa in a briefing stated that a 12-day State Level Training Workshop is ongoing at Calabar Municipality Local Government Council for field personnel.

According to him, “A total of 110 consisting of facilitators, supervisors, and enumerators are drawn mainly from the communities within the selected areas in the State carefully selected through online competitive recruitment exercise.”

The trial census which will begin from the 11th to the 24th of July 2022 will be conducted in 9 Local Government Areas of the State, 3 per senatorial district. For the South, you have Bakassi, Calabar South, and Odukpani. For Central you have Yakurr, Obubra, and Boki. While Bekwara, Ogoja, and Obudu form the North.

“Housing numbering will take place from 11th – 16th July 2022, to be followed by validation of enumeration areas from 17th – 19th July 2022 and enumeration of personnel from 20th – 24th July 2022,” he said.

The Commissioner maintained that the trial census is not the actual census but as mandated by law to be conducted a year before the actual census, therefore, its result will not form the basis of the 2023 census result.
