Repressive Cultures And The Money Woman Practice In Cross River State: Realistic Solutions.

INTRODUCTION

A repressive culture according to reverso means putting a group of people into a state of subjugation.

Also known as cultural repression, these practices deny victims of their rights and lead to stereotyping which is often harmful.

There are different repressive cultures across the world. Cross River State is not left out with issues of women not being allowed into village squares to the money wife practice, witch-branding and burning as well as exclusion from inheritance.

To tackle some of these cultures, several laws have been enacted by federal, state, and local

government legislatures. However, the practices still continue especially, the “money wife”culture in the Becheve community of Obanliku Local Government Area.

A recent mini documentary published by Prime Progress and CrossRiverWatch shows a chilling picture that despite media reportage of solutions proffered to the problem, there are limitations and the practice had continued unabated.

But, some Becheve natives claim the practice has since been abolished with recent reportage merely staged for personal gains.

8. What is the condition of money wives who suffered years and decades of repression?

11. Has there been any restitution?
12. What is the sustainable way forward?
