Boki Assembly Impeach House Leader Over ‘Abuse Of Power, Embezzlement’

By Kelvin Ololo

Boki Local Government legislative Council has impeached Hon. Obi Sunday Nku, as the leader of the 8th Assembly over alleged abuse of office, power, misappropriation and embezzlement of fund.

The impeachment resolution was reached by a two-third majority unanimous voting of the assembly men on Wednesday 9th July, 2025.

According to the letter signed by ten members of the assembly including the Deputy leader Hon. Obi Jonathan Ekwo, the Majority Leader Hon. Obi Alphonsus Bisong, Deputy majority leader Hon. Anwah Martina Ekah and the Chief Whip of the house Hon. Bessong Cecilia, addressing to the Speaker Cross River State House of Assembly, the APC State Chairman, the Local Government Council Chairman and members representing Boki 1 and Boki 2 in the State House of Assembly.

The aggrieved members noted that the impeachment is in pursuant to the provisions of the Cross River State Local Governments Law No.22 (2007), Part IV, Sec 33, Sub Sec (1), (2) &(3), and in consonance with the extant Uniform Standing Orders for Legislative Counsel in Cross River State, Sec 3.4(e).

It read “As Leader of the House, you have failed to be responsive and to carry along your colleagues in the course of administering the office of Leader of Council. You make unilateral decisions without due consultation or recourse to other Councillors.

“You have continuously failed to brief or report to the house on the outcome of series of meetings held on our behalf with the Executive Governor, his Deputy and other government functionaries. The last of its kind was the Leaders’ interactive session with His Excellency, Prince Bassey Edet Otu, a fortnight ago in Calabar. This has left us in the dark as far as our relationship, interaction with other arms of government, and legislative business is concerned.

“Money released by the government to facilitate and aid our legislative duties have been misappropriated and in some cases embezzled by the Leader on other occasions. You have equally refused or failed to desist from such acts of impropriety and be amenable to the house despite repeated complaints and queries from your colleagues.

” As admin, you intentionally refused or failed to add your colleagues to the Cross River State “Unified Councillors Forum” platform created since 9th January, 2025, shortly after our inauguration despite our repeated appeals, thereby wittingly shortchanging and depriving us from a very key and important information channel meant for all serving Councillors in the State.

“Again, you postponed our sitting sine die even in the midst of crisis ravaging neighbouring communities of Boje and Isobendeghe in Boki Local Government Area, without due consultation with the leadership of the house.
The consequent of the impeachment entails handover of the official car, and any other official item(s) in his custody to the house.”
